Egypt is planning to establish the country’s first rail vehicle plant to manufacture metro trains, EMUs, DMUs and monorail trains. The factory will be built in East Port Said industrial zone.
The plan was revealed on September 16 during a meeting between the Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr Hala El-Said, Minister of Transport Major General Kamel El-Wazir and Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Engineer Yehia Zaki.
The ministers discussed the project’s implementation schedule, its economic studies and the expected production volume.
Things you need to know about the factory:
- Construction and management will be done by the Egyptian National Company for Railway Industries, Suez Canal Economic Zone, Egyptian Sovereign Fund, and Bombardier Transportation.
- The project is jointly run by the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, and the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
- Construction planning is currently underway.
- The factory aims to strengthen Egypt’s transportation industry by producing equipment to meet the growing demand for rail vehicles in Egypt as well as Africa and the Middle East.
