Thales commissions signalling upgrades on Egypt’s main lines

Thales has commissioned signalling upgrades on Egypt’s three major railway lines over the last six months. Seven stations are now equipped with a new signalling system.

As part of the Egyptian National Railways Modernization Project (ENRMP), the existing mechanical signalling systems are being replaced with Electronic Interlocking System (EIS) to increase safety and speed. Thales has completed upgrades at Kafr el Dawar and Damanhour stations on the 159km Alexandria-Benha line; Sandanhour, Toukh, and Qaha stations on the 48km Benha-Cairo line; and Geziret and El Maragha stations on the180km Asyut-Nagh Hammadi line.

Thales reports a 90% completion rate on signalling upgrades on Egypt’s Alexandria-Cairo line, following the commissioning of the 37km Damanhour section on August 20, 2020. A total of 107km with new signalling system is now in operation on ENR’s busiest railway corridor.

The project also entails new level crossings, upgrade of telecommunications systems, and installation of a centralized control centre.

Other rail lines being upgraded include the 250km Beni Suef – Asyut line by Alstom and the Zagazig – Abu Kebir and Benha – Port Said sections (total of 260 km) by Siemens.
