Construction of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line was launched on April 15 with a groundbreaking ceremony at the proposed site of the Ikeja Station. The new line is part of an ongoing light rail construction project that is expected to raise the mass transportation capacity in Lagos State.
The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Transport Minister Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.
The 37-km standard gauge line will run from Agbado to Marina and will be constructed in two phases.
The first phase which runs over 28 km from Agbado to Oyingbo will share track with the Lagos-Ibadan Railway from Agbado to Ebute – Metta and then run on a dedicated track from Ebute – Metta to Oyingbo. It will be completed in 24 months, offering an estimated ridership of 500,000 commuters per day. The second phase runs from Oyingbo to Marina.
Once fully operational, the Red Line will have 12 stations. Three stations will be along the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, and 9 new stations will be constructed at Iju, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, Oyingbo, Iddo, Ebute – Metta and Marina.
The LRMT Red Line project is contracted to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the contractor for the Blue Line whose construction started in 2010. The Blue Line runs from Okokomaiko to Marina and is 78% complete.
The LRMT is a project of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
