The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has signed a contract with Mitsubishi Corporation and Kinki Sharyo to supply 184 metro cars for the Cairo Metro Line 4 Phase 1.
Under the contract valued at Japanese Yen 40bn (US$ 351m), Mitsubishi which is the prime contractor will oversee the project’s schedule and day-to-day operations while Kinki Sharyo will deliver the rolling stock between 2025 and 2028.
Phase 1 of the Cairo Metro Line 4 project is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan and will benefit from Japanese advanced railway technologies.
In November 2020, Mitsubishi signed a US$800m contract to execute the railway systems, track and depot works package (CP411) for the project.
Both contracts are yen-loan projects in Egypt under JICA’s STEP (Special Terms for Economic Partnership) programme.
The 19km Phase 1 served by 16 stations will stretch between central Cairo and the Giza Pyramid Complex in southwest Greater Cairo. Line 4 of Cairo Metro is expected to help ease traffic congestion in Greater Cairo.
NAT has also awarded Alstom a €876m contract to supply 55 Metropolis trains (9 cars per train) as part of the upgrade of Cairo Metro Line 1.
Mitsubishi and Kinki Sharyo have delivered approximately 1600 rail cars to Egypt over five decades.
