CITAL is a railway equipment assembly and maintenance company incorporated in Algeria. It was established in 2011 as a joint venture of Alstom Transport S.A. (43%), Ferrovial (41%), Entreprise Métro d’Alger (10%) and Alstom Algeria (6%).
In April 2016, CITAL and the Algerian National Railways (SNTF) signed a framework agreement to expand the joint venture to assemble Alstom Coradia Polyvalent regional and inter-city multiple units for the Algerian market. The agreement marked SNTF’s entry into the joint venture with a 10% stake, with Ferrovial reducing its shareholding from 41% to 31%.
Headquartered in Annaba, Algeria, CITAL has a total of 330 employees across all of its locations.
CITAL was created out of Algeria’s need to have modern industrial assembly and maintenance capacities in the railway sector. The company has two main activities: assembling of Alstom Citadis trams for current and future projects in Algeria, and maintenance of the trams.
Currently, six tramway systems are maintained by CITAL: Algiers tramway since December 2010; Oran tramway since April 2013 and Constantine tramway since June 2013, Sidi Bel Abbès tramway since July 2017, Ouargla tramway since March 2018 and Sétif tramway since May 2018.
The maintenance of the Mostaganem tramway (entry into service is scheduled for March 2021) and that of the Coradia Polyvalent trains will also be provided by CITAL.
CITAL’s assembling site in Annaba was inaugurated in May 2015, covering an area of 5.2 hectares. The plant has a delivery capacity of 5 trams per month. Maintenance centers are located in Oran, Algiers, and Constantine.
CITAL has assembled Citadis 302 and 402 trams for the tramway systems in Constantine, Ouargla, Mostaganem, Sétif and Sidi Bel Abbès.
The company maintains all of the existing tramway systems in Algeria: Algiers tramway since December 2010; Oran tramway since April 2013 and Constantine tramway since June 2013, Sidi Bel Abbès tramway since July 2017, Ouargla tramway since March 2018 and Sétif tramway since May 2018.
