A joint venture (JV) of TSO and Orascom Construction has been awarded a $112.5m contract by a consortium of China Railway Group and AVIC International to build the track for a light rail line in Egypt. In August 2017, the consortium of Chinese companies was awarded a $1.24bn contract to build the 10th of Ramadan Railway, a 66 km interurban light rail line that will link Cairo with the 10th of Ramadan city.
Under the contract, TSO and Orascom Construction will install 66 km of double track, 10 km of single track in the depot and build 11 stations. The joint venture will be responsible for the design, supply chain management and construction of the light rail track. The duration of the track installation works is twelve months.
The 10th of Ramadan Railway is an interurban light rail project that will connect Ain Shams and the 10th of Ramadan city, passing through the cities of El Obour, El Shorouk and Badr. The project will involve upgrading and doubling the existing ENR Cairo-Suez line between Ain Shams and Al Robaiky, and constructing a new double-track line from Al Robaiky to the 10th of Ramadan city.
Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Qingdao Sifang will supply 22 six-car electric multiple units (EMU) with a design speed of 120 km/h and a capacity of 2,222 passengers. The trains will incorporate wind- and sand-resistant designs for use in the Egyptian environment. The rolling stock contract also includes 12-year maintenance support for the trains.
TSO has already established its presence in Egypt where it was involved in the construction of Cairo Metro Line 3. In two turnkey contracts awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels, TSO and consortium partners Orascom and ETF were responsible for the design, procurement, track laying and commissioning of the track for Phase 3 and 4B of the Cairo Metro Line 3 project.
