Background

The 10th of Ramadan Railway is an interurban light rail project that is currently under construction between Ain Shams and the 10th of Ramadan city, passing through the cities of El Obour, El Shorouk and Badr. The project involves upgrading and doubling the existing ENR Cairo-Suez line between Ain Shams and Al Robaiky, and constructing a new double track line from Al Robaiky to the 10th of Ramadan city.

The LRT will serve 11 stations which include Adly Mansour, Abour, Future, Shorouk, New Heliopolis, Badr, Industrial Park, Ramadan-1, Robaikey, New Government Capital, and New Administrative Capital.

In August 2017, Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth $1.24bn with a consortium of AVIC International and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Group.

TSO and Orascom Construction Joint Venture: Track laying and construction of 11 stations. Station construction is further sub-contracted as follows:

Arab Contractors: Adly Mansour, New Heliopolis and Robaikey.

Hassan Allam Holding: New Government Capital and New Administrative Capital stations.

Concord: Badr and Shorouk stations.

Petrojet: Abour and Future stations.

The Holding Co. for Roads, Bridges and Land Transportation Projects: Industrial Park and Ramadan 1 stations.

CRRC Qingdao Sifang: Supply of rolling stock.

Consortium of CASCO and China Huaxin : Signalling and Communication System.

Siveco China: Supply of Maintenance Management System (MMS).

 

Recent Developments

Transport Minister Kamal El-Wazir conducts an inspection tour of the project.

Overall project status: 63% complete

Bridges are 47% complete, tunnels 86%, and maintenance workshop 63% complete.

Milestones

Civil works – site clearance, construction of stations, bridges and tunnels.

Egypt signs a $1.2bn loan with China Exim Bank to finance the light rail project. The loan matures in five years and is repayable over fifteen years.

Out of this, $739 million with a 1.8% interest rate is for infrastructure and $461 million at a 2% interest rate is for purchasing rolling stock.

AVIC International and China Railway Group awarded CRRC Qingdao Sifang the contract to supply 22 six-car EMUs. Read more details about the EMUs here.
