Background

The Cairo Metro Line 4 project involves the construction of 42 km of a metro line with 37 stations. It will be implemented in two phases.

Phase 1 extends from Hadayek El Ashgar Station to Amr Ibn El Aas Station with a length of 19 km and includes 16 underground stations. Phase 2 extends from Amr Ibn El Aas Station to the New Cairo Station with a length of 23 km and includes 21 stations.

Phase 1 of Cairo Metro Line 4

Implementation of Phase 1 is structured into four packages: two civil works packages, a rolling stock package and a systems package. The rolling stock for this phase consists of 23 eight-car trains whose procurement is currently underway (NAT is only accepting bids with a Japanese company as the main contractor).

Financing of Phase 1
  • Egypt Government: $2.4 billion
  • JICA: $1.2 billion. First tranche of $391m was disbursed in March 2012. This tranche has a 10-year grace period and will be repaid in 40 years at an annual interest rate of 0.2 per cent.
