Background

Since 2010, the Egyptian government, with the support of the World Bank (WB) and other development partners, has embarked on railway reforms to make the railways safer, responsive, and competitive, through: (i) investing in rail infrastructure and modernization of the signalling systems to improve efficiency, operational capacity and increase the safety level to match international standards; and (ii) introduce measures to strengthen the management capacity of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR).

Contractors

Thales

  • Alexandria – Benha (160 km): Awarded in May 2013; Ongoing.
  • Asyut – Nagh Hammadi (180 km): Awarded in November 2017; Ongoing.
  • Benha – Cairo (48 km): Awarded in April 2018; Ongoing.

Alstom

  • Beni Suef – Asyut (250 km): Awarded in January 2015; Ongoing.

Alstom is installing its Smartlock 400 GP interlocking system.

Siemens

  • Zagazig – Abu Kebir and Benha – Port Said sections (total of 260 km): Awarded in April 2016; Ongoing.

Salcef S.p.A.

  • Cairo – Aswan track renewal (290 km): Awarded in 2011; Completed in 2016.
  • Cairo – Alexandria line: Subcontracted in Oct 2020 by Rowad Modern Engineering to renew 46 km of track and 229 turnouts, construct 1 km of track, and install 33 turnouts and 4,000 glued isolated joints.

Recent Developments

The loan will finance the installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 to enhance the reliability and safety performance of the country’s national rail network.
