Background
Since 2010, the Egyptian government, with the support of the World Bank (WB) and other development partners, has embarked on railway reforms to make the railways safer, responsive, and competitive, through: (i) investing in rail infrastructure and modernization of the signalling systems to improve efficiency, operational capacity and increase the safety level to match international standards; and (ii) introduce measures to strengthen the management capacity of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR).
The project, known as Egypt National Railways Modernization Project (ENRMP) has two main components:
Background
The project, known as Egypt National Railways Modernization Project (ENRMP) has two main components:
- Modernization of signals and rail renewals: Upgrading of ENR’s signalling system to electronic interlocking system (EIS), installation of a Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) system, and rail renewals in selected sections of the national network. This component is financed by the World Bank and the Egyptian government.
- Installation of the European Train Control System Level 1 (ETCS– L1): Supply and installation of ETCS – L1 trackside equipment, installation of on-board ETCS equipment in 100 locomotives, and supply of spare parts and maintenance. This component is financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The following sections will be upgraded under the ENRMP:
Alexandria – Cairo (208 km)
Cairo – Beni Suef (125 km)
Beni Suef – Asyut (250 km)
Asyut – Nagh Hammadi (180 km)
Benha – Port Said (190 km)
The ENRMP will increase network capacity, improve safety, and enhance reliability of train services.
An integrated signalling and communication system will allow trains to increase their speed from the current 120 km/h to 160 km/h.
