Background
The Tanzania SGR project is a new railway network which is currently under construction to link Dar es Salaam on the east coast with Mwanza on the north west region. The project is intended to replace the old metre-gauge rail network on the Tanzania Central Railway Corridor with a total length of 2,707 km. This Corridor comprise the following sections: Dar es Salaam–Tabora (840km), Tabora–Kigoma (411km ), Tabora–Mwanza (379km), and Kaliua–Mpanda (km 210).
Phase I of the construction of the SGR starts from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza with route length of 1219 km. It will be implemented in five lots. The Morogoro – Makutupora railway is the second lot (Lot 2) of Phase I.
Background
The Morogoro – Makutupora section will have eight passenger stations (Mkata, Kilosa, Kidete, Gulwe, Igandu, Dodoma, Bahi and Makutopora) and six freight terminals.
Financing
Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance signed a facility agreement with Standard Chartered Bank (acting as Global Coordinator, Bookrunner and mandated Lead Arranger) for a US$ 1.46bn long-term loan to fund the construction of the SGR project from Dar es Salaam to Makutupora (Lot 1 & 2):
- $900m ECA-backed loan
- $200m DFI tranche from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), the Trade and Development Bank (TDB) and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank)
- $360m commercial loan
Participating ECAs include EKN (Sweden), CESCE (Spain), OEKB (Austria), SACE (Italy), SERV (Switzerland) and EKF (Denmark).
Project Consultant
Joint Venture of Korea Railroad Corporation, Cheil Engineering, Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants & Architecture, Unitec Civil Consultants, Multi-Tech Consult, SSF Ingenieure, D’Appolonia, Balaji Railroad Systems.
The consultant is responsible for design review, construction supervision and project management.
