Egypt Transport Minister Kamal El Wazir received the first of six new air-conditioned metro trains from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem on May 12.
The new trains will operate on Cairo Metro Line 2 from Shoubra El Khema to El Mounib.
In 2019, Hyundai Rotem won the $131m contract to supply six 8-car trains as well as provide maintenance and spare parts for 8 years. Hyundai Rotem will deliver one train per month, completing the delivery in October 2021. This will bring the total number of air-conditioned trains operating on Cairo Metro Line 2 to ten out of 45 trains.
The order is financed through a €100m soft loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Egyptian Treasury.
Hyundai Rotem also delivered the 9th train of the 32 air-conditioned metro trains for Cairo Metro Line 3. Awarded in 2017, the deal also provides for ten trains to be assembled locally at the SEMAF factory of the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI). So far, components for two trains have been received and Hyundai Rotem will provide technical support to AOI.
