Transmashholding (TMH) has delivered its second batch of 10 passenger coaches to the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) under a more than €1bn contract signed in September 2018. The coaches were received by the Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir at Alexandria port.
TMH has so far delivered 33 coaches following the delivery of 22 coaches on June 25. All the 33 coaches are third-class coaches with forced ventilation.
The remaining coaches will arrive in batches of 35 coaches per month. Under the contract, all passenger coaches should be delivered within 5 years from the date of contract signing.
The coaches will be sent to various cities including Alexandria, Zagazig, Mansoura, Tanta, Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Luxor and Aswan.
A number of new coaches are also being assembled at the SEMAF factory, which is run by the Arab Organization for Industrialization.
The rolling stock order is the largest in the history of the Egyptian National Railways and it shows the renewed focus to improve rail passenger service delivery in the country. The order is financed by the Hungarian and Russian Exim banks under state guarantee of both countries.
